MINUTES OF THE GENERAL  MEETING

                                                                                     

AUGUST 9, 2005

 

The meeting was called to order at 12:00 noon.  The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Walter Stewart and a moment of silence was held.  President, Norman Briggs, announced that all the handicapped and the head table could get their lunch followed by each table in order of the numbers drawn.  There were two (2) new members and two (2) guests in attendance at the meeting. 

President, Norman Briggs, announced that we have two (2) volunteers to sell the raffle tickets – Ann Farrell and Thelma Hale.  Also, 2nd Vice President, Elinor Wells announced that two (2) of our members volunteered to decorate the tables and they are June Ennis and Linda Parker. 

 The speaker today was to have been Anne Holdren, Executive Director of Kern County Employees Retirement Association.  Anne was not able to be in attendance at the last minute but will be with us in the fall.  The time was spent discussing Medicare Part D and Liberty Mutual.  President, Norman Briggs, announced that Liberty Mutual has made REOKC an “insurance group” where each of our members will be able to get car insurance, home insurance and liability insurance at a discount.  The announcement on Medicare Part D was PLEASE make sure you know everything about it before you do anything.  It has been announced that Medicare Part D is going to be big money for Providers and Pharmacies.  Don’t be taken in by offers you may get in the mail or on the telephone.

 BUSINESS MEETING:

 TREASURER, John DeMario gave the Treasurer’s Report for June 2005 and July 2005.  The report stated that REOKC membership as of June 30, 2005 was 3,424 and as of July 31, 2005 was 3,426.

 CRCEA - No Report

 EYE GLASS – No Report

 SUNSHINE - Belva Jared reported that she sent several Get Well Cards and two (2) Sympathy Cards.  Belva also reminded everybody to please let her know when you know that someone is in the hospital or passes away.  She is very willing to send the cards out but she needs to be aware of whom to send them.  Belva made a request that if someone knows the family of Martin Bidabe, Jr. please contact Belva.  Martin passed away and she would like to send a card to the family.

 HOST/HOSTESS PROGRAM – Mary Lou Bennett reported that for the month of June there were 35 volunteers who worked 107 hours and assisted 1,259 visitors to the County Administration Building.  Also, during the month of July there were 30 volunteers who worked 92 hours and assisted 982 visitors to the County Administration Building.  She also reported that since 1992 through July 2005 the Host/Hostess Program has assisted 224,158 visitors.

 NEWSLETTER –The deadline for articles to the TREND editor is August 15, 2005 for our September/October issue.

 OLD BUSINESS:

 Those in attendance liked the idea of having Mossman’s cater the Bar-B-Que in July.  The only complaint heard was the fact that it was slow at the condiment area. 

 NEW BUSINESS:

 President, Norman Briggs, appointed a Nominating Committee.  Those on the committee are Dave Merritt, Chairman, Opal Hargis, Vernon Lowe, Belva Jared and Kathy Ervin.

 The attendance prize was won by Dixie Shields.  There were 30 - $5.00 amounts for the cash giveaway.  After the distribution of prizes, the meeting was adjourned at 1:30 p.m.
