RETIRED EMPLOYEES OF KERN COUNTY

MINUTES OF GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING

August 12, 2003

The meeting was called to order by President, David Merritt, at 12:00 P.M.  Walter Stewart led the Pledge of Allegiance.  A moment of silence was held.

In attendance were four new members.   Also President, David Merritt, announced that long time member, Alice Mack is confined to California Care for unknown reasons.  She is looking very frail.  Also, Everett Julkowski had a triple or quadruple bypass surgery and a pacemaker installed and he was at home.  During the meeting President, David Merritt, spoke with Cathy Olague from Kern Federal Credit Union who reported that Everett was taken back to the hospital after a mild stroke.  His vision was the only thing at this time that is affected.

After eating our catered luncheon, our speakers were introduced.  Member, Sheila Roth, introduced Teresa Irvin Twisselman, Coordinator, English/Language Arts, with the Kern County Superintendent of Schools.  Teresa works with all the teachers in the County to get their students to read at grade level.   Teresa is looking for volunteers to go to member schools to read with the students in the second grade.  A volunteer would volunteer one

day a week for one hour. You would be a member for a team of five and this way you

work only 1 day a week but the students would have one-on-one reading assistance five

days per week.  The length of time you would volunteer is a semester.  A semester would be September to December and the next semester would be January through May.      Vice President, Norman Briggs, introduced Al Eaton from Smith Barney.   Mr. Eaton spoke on Fraud.  Mr. Eaton has many certifications and in the 1980’s was employed with the Kern County Airports.  Mr. Eaton stated the over 1/3 of all the fraud in this country is perpetrated on seniors 65 years and over.  Most telemarketers are honest and doing their job.  But the ones who do illegal activities are con artists.  They are after the money that senior citizens have.  The senior citizens have a flaw which is that they tend to trust people more than they should.  Seniors are also at home more.  Mr. Eaton gave several points to think about that are illegal.  It is illegal to pay money to win a prize, to ask for a fee to get a loan, never give your bank account number or VISA number to a telemarketer, etc.  Kelly McWatters from Smith Barney spoke on identity theft.   She suggested that everybody should order a credit report on a yearly basis.  The three major credit bureaus to order a credit report from are Equifax, Trans Union and Experian.  It was stated that you should never carry your social security card with you.  The problem that was brought up by one of the members is the fact that your social security number is on your Medicare card.  Everything that comes to your house should be shredded even your address label on your junk mail.

Doris Williams gave the Treasurer’s Report for June 30, 2003 and July 31, 2003.  Doris reported the total REOKC membership as of July 31, 2003 was 3,105.
