August 10, 2004
The meeting was called to order at 12:00 noon. Walter Stewart led the Pledge of Allegiance and a
moment of silence was held. There were no new
members, guests or first time attendees present. The
table numbers were announced and the members went in order after the head table and
handicapped members got their lunch.
Vice-President, Jeanne Berkshire, introduced our guest speaker,
Vivian Tucker from Channel 17. Vivian spoke
on numerous people from Kern County history. Some
of these people were well known to our members and others were not so well known.

CRCEA AB979
had absolutely NO opposition but it has been pulled.
It seems that this bill was written by a Democrat and this is an election
year. Everett Julkowski reminded the
membership of the Fall Conference in Fresno from October 18 20, 2004. Some of the speakers will be Raymond Lucia,
financial planner and a radio host; on Tuesday a legislative panel and Dave Merritt will
speak on his Race Across America and the Fresno office of HICAP will also have
a speaker there. The cost will be $15.00 per
person.

HOST/HOSTESS
Mary Lou Bennett reported that for the month of July there were 31 volunteers who worked
95 hours and assisted 1,085 visitors to the County Administration Building. Mary Lou reminded everybody in attendance that if
they want to volunteer please contact her after the meeting.
NEWSLETTER The
deadline for articles for the next newsletter will be August 15, 2004.
President, Norman Briggs, reminded everybody that the Kern
County Fair is coming up and that the Fair Chairman, Jeanne Berkshire, had sign-up sheets
on the back table. Please sign up and help
and earn a free Christmas luncheon. The
Christmas luncheon costs $10.00.
OLD BUSINESS: President, Norman Briggs, asked David Merritt to
please come forward and speak regarding medical benefit information that was sent out to
retirees under the age of 65. It has been
determined that not everybody in the 65 and under age group received this information. The information was New Medical and Prescription
Benefits, Effective September 1, 2004. Approximately
40 50% of the members did not receive this 14 page packet. Dave informed the membership that the members who
did not receive the packet have no idea that they were to sign up for a Primary Care
Physician (PCP) and the member would find a directory with the packet that lists your
choices, or on the county web site. For those
who didnt sign up by August 6th, a PCP will be assigned to you. This form was originally to have been completed by
July 30th, but it was extended to August 6th. The web site was pulled before August 10, 2004. David also announced that he received, at the
Board Meeting, the information that we need to send on to CRCEA to help CRCEA with the
attempt to get medical insurance for the 21 counties that are part of the 37 Act Counties. This is information that we have been attempting
to get from the County for a year. It is NOT
personal information. It does not have names
or social security numbers. It has
male/female, birth year and claims over $25,000.
NEW BUSINESS: We are looking for three volunteers to be on the
Nominating Committee. It is a short term job
and they will be working with 2 members of the Board.
The volunteers were Belva Jarad, Kathy Ervin and Ellen Castro.
The attendance prize was won by Ginger Mello. There were 24 - $5.00 amounts for the cash
giveaway. After the distribution of prizes,
the meeting was adjourned at 1:45 p.m.
Respectfully submitted this 19th day of August, 2004.
Ginger Mello, Secretary
