RETIRED EMPLOYEES OF KERN COUNTY

MINUTES OF GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING

February 11, 2003

The meeting was called to order by President, David Merritt, at 12:00 noon. Vernon Lowe led the Pledge of Allegiance.  A moment of silence was held.

There were no new members, guests or first-time attendees at our meeting.

Our guest speaker was introduced by our 1st Vice President, Norman Briggs.  Cheryl Ripley who works for the Kern County Environmental Health Services Department spoke regarding a new volunteer program at the Animal Shelter.  We no longer speak of the Dog Pound, it is the Animal Shelter.  Cheryl gave information on how many animals (dogs and cats) that the animal shelter receives each day and the cost of taking care of these animals.  She told how long the animals are held and the difference between the areas where the animals are kept.  If the animals are evaluated as to being able to be adopted, then they are held in a different part of the shelter and kept longer.  Cheryl also told that when a person goes to prison, the animal they owned is kept at the Animal Shelter until that person can make arrangements for someone to take care of the animal.  There are times that those animals are in the Animal Shelter a very long time.
