RETIRED
EMPLOYEES OF KERN COUNTY
MINUTES OF GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
January
14, 2003
The
meeting was called to order by President,
David Merritt, at 12:06 p.m.
Walter Stewart led the Pledge of
Allegiance.
A moment of silence was held.
There was one new
member, Ed Gonzales in attendance.
Our guest speaker was
introduced by our 1st
Vice-President, Norman Briggs.
Dr. Michelle Compton, Pharmacologist
from Kaiser Pharmacy spoke on interaction of
prescription drugs.
Dr. Compton stated that if you take
as much as 10 different drugs, then you have
a good chance that you could have trouble
with interaction results. Dr. Compton is fortunate that in her days work she spends
time meeting with patients to discuss their
medications. Dr. Compton stated that senior citizens take over one-third
of all drugs.
The cost of drugs is going up
rapidly.
It costs $500 million dollars to
research and develop new drugs.
Drug companies spend $8 billion
marketing to doctors, so ask your doctor for
samples, especially if you do not have
prescription coverage.
Most prescriptions will not hurt you
if you use them past the date on them but if
it is over a year old, throw them out.
If you take nitroglycerin throw it
out 6 months after it has been opened.
There are certain drugs that say do
not consume grapefruit juice while taking
the drug.
The reason is that studies have found
that grapefruit juice is the only juice that
changes enzymes in the liver.
If you consume the grapefruit juice,
then you will not get the benefit from the
drugs you take.
Dr. Compton had a lot of questions to
answer.
