RETIRED EMPLOYEES OF KERN COUNTY
MINUTES OF THE GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
November 9, 2004
The meeting was called to order at 12:00 noon. Walter Stewart led the Pledge of
Allegiance and a moment of silence. Table assignments were announced and the members went
in order after the head table and handicapped members got their lunch. There were four (4)
new members and three (3) guests in attendance today.
President, Norman Briggs, turned the meeting over to First Vice-President, Jeanne
Berkshire after all the ballots for the two (2) positions on the Board of Directors were
collected to be counted. Jeanne introduced Lana Fain from CALM. Lana explained the
"Holiday Lights" to be held at CALM from November 26 through December 30, 2004.
Of the nights from November 26 through December 30, they will be closed only four (4)
nights. There will be two (2) million lights and there is 25 volunteers needed each night
of the event. CALM started in 1983. CALM has not grown in size since it began. It covers
thirteen (13) acres and they have more land ready to enlarge on when the time comes that
they can enlarge. The cost to become a member is only $15 per person per year. With
membership you receive a newsletter and a good price on other deals held at CALM.
Michelle Watson from Kern Federal Credit Union introduced J. R. Benavides, the new
Branch Manager for the downtown office. Michelle announced that the banks are trying to
force the Credit Unions into paying taxes. Michelle told that there are petitions to be
signed if you would like to. If the Credit Union has to pay taxes, that means those costs
will be passed along to the members.
BUSINESS MEETING:
TREASURER, John DeMario was not in attendance. At the January meeting John will
give October, November and December reports.
CRCEA Everett Julkowski will give his report at the January meeting.
EYE GLASS Helen Heath reported that she has collected 6 pair of glasses,
6 eye glass cases and 1 pair slip-on dark glasses.
SUNSHINE Belva Jared reported that she did not send out cards in the past
month.
HOST/HOSTESS PROGRAM Mary Lou Bennett reported that for the month of
October there were 31 volunteers who worked 95 hours and assisted 1,659 visitors to the
County Administration Building. One day that Helen Dodd worked, she had 226 inquiries in
the six hour shift and directed another 5 or 6 inquiries on her way out of the building.
Mary Lou announced that she had a problem with one shift on Wednesday, November 24 and
needs a person to volunteer to work at that time. The person she had scheduled for that
shift called and said that they can not work. A person volunteered to work for Mary Lou
that day.
NEWSLETTER President, Norman Briggs announced that if any one has an item
or something that they would like to see in the newsletter, please contact Norm.
OLD BUSINESS: President, Norman Briggs, thanked those who stepped forward to be
considered to hold the positions on the Board. The Board appointed Earlene Smith at the
meeting this morning to finish the term of Dolores Christian. The Secretary, Ginger Mello,
read the results for the election: Opal Hargis, 70 votes; Nettie Collins, 51 votes and Dut
Dauwalder, 39 votes. Opal Hargis and Nettie Collins will be serving a two (2) year term on
the Board of Directors.
NEW BUSINESS: No new business.
The attendance prize was won by Rosetta McBride. There were 29 - $5.00 amounts for the
cash giveaway and five (5) throws and travel mugs donated by Kern Federal Credit Union.
After the distribution of prizes, the meeting was adjourned at 1:37 p.m.
