RETIRED EMPLOYEES OF KERN
COUNTY
MINUTES OF GENERAL
MEMBERSHIP MEETING
October 14, 2003
At 12:00 noon the numbers were announced for each table. A delicious catered lunch was enjoyed by all in
attendance. The meeting was called to order
by 1st Vice President Norman Briggs at 12:37 p.m. Walter Stewart led the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of
silence was held. There
was one new member, Sue Jennings in attendance.
First Vice President Norman Briggs introduced our speakers. The first speaker was Claude Fiddler, Chairman of
the Board of the Gleaners. The second
speaker was Phil Vander, also from the Gleaners. There
was a representative from Kern County Aging & Adult Services Department with brochures
on the HICAP program.
Claude Fiddler spoke after the video that was shown explaining
what the Gleaners are and how they began. The very beginning of the Gleaners was when the
group was able to go out into the farms to pick what was left by the farmers and they also
went into the backyards of people in the area with fruit trees. Now the Gleaners have a bread route where they
pick up bread and pastries from different stores five days a week. The Gleaners still rescue the produce from fields
to give to people in need. The people that
they help have a referral from other organizations to be able to receive the food that the
Gleaners give out. It is a very organized
operation which helps a large amount of people each year.
Claude gave a short history of the Gleaners, where the food comes from and
the fact that the Gleaners trade items with other food banks. Phil Vanden spoke regarding the volunteer
operation of the Gleaners. There are
volunteers who take the orders, others who pack the products in the bags or boxes for the
recipients to receive. If the volunteer can
drive a truck or fork lift they could be put to work using these skills. The volunteers are fed lunch each day so if there
is a volunteer who would like to do the cooking it would be very much appreciated.
