RETIRED EMPLOYEES OF KERN COUNTY
MINUTES OF THE GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
October 12, 2004
The table numbers were announced and the members went in order after the head table and
handicapped members got their lunch. The meeting was called to order at 12:30 and Walter
Stewart led the Pledge of Allegiance. There were no new members, guests or first time
attendees.
President, Norman Briggs, introduced our speaker for today. Eric Barthel is the Kern
County Consultant on Health Benefits. Eric spoke regarding the choices the members have on
the medical benefits. It was announced that after the General Meeting, there would be a
Special Board Meeting to make the final decision on Health Benefits. The Health Benefits
for those under the age of 65 will be staying the same. Eric explained that there are 3
choices the members could make. Those choices are to keep Pacificare and delete Healthnet;
or keep Healthnet and delete Pacificare; or do nothing and keep both
Pacificare and Healthnet. After considerable discussion it was the decision of the members
in attendance to discontinue Pacificare.
BUSINESS MEETING:
TREASURER, John DeMario, gave the Treasurers Report for September 30, 2004.
The report stated that the REOKC membership as of September 30, 2004 was 3,187.
CRCEA Everett Julkowski announced he would have a report after the CRCEA
Conference which will be held October 18 20, 2004.
EYE GLASS Helen Heath reported that she has collected 7 pair of glasses,
1 dark pair of glasses and 9 eye glass cases.
SUNSHINE Belva Jared reported that she sent a sympathy card to the family
of Herman Riese and a Get-Well Card to Margaret Barbarena.
HOST/HOSTESS Mary Lou Bennett reported that for the month of September
there were 32 volunteers who worked 97.5 hours and assisted 1,082 visitors to the County
Administration Building. Mary Lou will be happy to train you to work at the Information
Desk when you volunteer.

NEW BUSINESS:
NOMINATING COMMITTEE REPORT Opal Hargis, Chairman of the
Nominating Committee, reported the following Officers:
President: Norman Briggs
1st Vice President: Jeanne Berkshire
2nd Vice President: Elinor Wells
Secretary: Ginger Mello
Treasurer: John DeMario
Earline Smith has been appointed by the Board of Directors to replace Dolores Christian
and to finish the 1 year left on Dolores term. There are two Directors who are up
for election this year. Opal Hargiss and Mary Lou Bennetts (replacement for
Alan Choy) terms are up this year. There are three members running for the two terms.
Those three members are as follows:
Nettie Collins 2005/2006
Dut Dauwalder 2005/2006
Opal Hargis 2005/2006
There were NO nominations from the floor. MOTION by David Merritt to close the
nominations from the floor, seconded by Belva Jared and CARRIED. There will be an
election at our November meeting. Only two of the above names will become directors.
CATHY OLAGUE, KERN FEDERAL CREDIT UNION Cathy made several announcements.
The Credit Union has been growing. They hope to be opening a little office at the Auto
Mall in January or February. The downtown office will be going through a second remodel
over the Thanksgiving Holiday. The Annual Kids Day is scheduled for Saturday, October 16,
2004 between 10 and 2. There will be games for the kids and interesting classes for the
teens.
President, Norman Briggs, announced that the Health Fair will be held in the
Lobby at the County Administration Building on November 4, 2004. Norman also announced
that Dr. Grabski had donated his two BC football tickets for Saturday, October 16th
to be raffled off to a member at todays meeting. The money collected for these
football tickets will be donated to the Homeless Shelter.
The attendance prize was won by Georgia Morgan. There were 28 - $5.00 amounts for the
cash giveaway. After the distribution of prizes, the meeting was adjourned at 1:42 p.m.
